VMC Version 3: Now with Background Operation!

This new version introduces background operation , a highly beneficial feature, particularly for Apple Watch users. It allows the app to function continuously and without interruption, even if your iPhone's screen is locked or another application is active. The default settings are: With these settings, your iPhone will eventually enter sleep mode, but the Apple Watch display will seamlessly continue to receive updates. When an Apple Watch isn't in use, consider these two settings: Both of these options will prevent your iPhone from sleeping.  The setting on the right only activates this behavior when your iPhone is connected to a charger.   VMC Version 2.0 This new version includes Apple Watch integration. Now, you can use your phone to mark a waypoint (placing it where it will have good GPS reception) and then check your VMC with a glance at your Apple Watch. As you can see in the Apple Watch screenshots, the VMC is displayed in the center of the watch face, with a bar at the bottom. This bar indicates the proportion of your Speed over Ground (SoG) that is contributing to your Velocity Made Good to the destination (VMC). As the angle between your course and the destination increases, the speed directly towards the destination becomes a smaller percentage of your SoG. Consequently, the indication on the bar will decrease in size and become darker. Please see  this video  and the other articles on this blog for more information.

VMC iPhone App App approved, get it on App Store! I've created an iPhone app to calculate Velocity Made on Course (VMC). It's really easy to use, and I'm planning a future update to include Apple Watch support. VMC is a super helpful measurement that a lot of people I've talked to, either don't know about or mix up with VMG. The concept of VMC is most easily understood when considering sailing directly or nearly directly downwind. As most sailors know, sailing straight downwind, even if going wing-on-wing ("πεταλούδα"), is not really efficient sailing  as it primarily relies on wind pressure rather than lift. Plus, heading straight downwind can be a bit risky since accidental jibes can happen more easily.
